Common Fiber Amplifiers in Optical Transmission

Optical Fiber Amplifier (OFA) refers to a new all-optical amplifier used in optical fiber communication lines for signal amplification.

The fiber amplifier technology is to incorporate a rare earth element capable of generating laser light in the core of the optical fiber, and the direct light excitation provided by the laser is used to amplify the transmitted optical signal. The traditional optical fiber transmission system uses an optical-electric-optical regenerative repeater, which affects the stability and reliability of the system. To remove the above conversion process, the signal is amplified and transmitted directly on the optical path. An new all-optical transmission type repeater is used instead of this regenerative repeater. Suitable devices are Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA), Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (PDFA), Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (NDFA). At present, optical amplification technology mainly uses EDFA.

Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA)

Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). Also often abbreviated as fiber amplifiers, amplifiers, and optical amplifiers. The main function is to amplify the C-band optical power to achieve long-distance transmission.

It is currently the most widely used fiber amplifier. According to the location and parameters used by EDFA, it is generally divided into the following categories:

1, Booster Amplifier, abbreviated as BA. Also called power amplifier .The optical power at the end of the radiation is amplified.

2, Line Amplifier, abbreviated as LA. The intermediate optical power of the line is amplified.

3. Preamplifier, abbreviated as PA. The optical power at the receiving end is amplified.

The three different models of EDFA parameters vary.

SOA amplifier

Semiconductor optical amplifier abbreviated as: SOA

The SOA optical amplifier can achieve 1310nm optical signal amplification at 100G, 40G speed. The amplification band is generally 1230~1360nm, covering the wavelength of 1310nm. The products are mainly divided into 2*2/4*4/6*6/8*8, which can realize the amplification of 2 channel, 4 channel, 6 channel and 8channel 1310nm 100G optical signals respectively.

Raman Fiber Amplifier (RFA)

Raman Fiber Amplifier (RFA) is a third-order nonlinear effect by Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) when a strong laser is transmitted in an optical fiber.

advantage:

RFA is an ultra-wideband fiber amplifier: the low loss range of ordinary fiber is 1270 nm to 1670 nm, EDFA can only work in the range of 1525 nm to 1625 nm, and RFA can be amplified at full wavelength.

Low noise figure: Used in conjunction with EDFA, the system noise figure can be reduced, which can increase the non-relay distance.

Distributed amplification : long-distance transmission and remote pump spectrum can be realized, which is especially suitable for occasions where it is not convenient to set up a repeater such as a seabed or a desert optical cable communication.

Due to the advantages of the Raman Amplifier, it is likely to become the mainstream of the next generation of optical transmission amplifiers.
